Matanot L’Evyonim – Gifts to the Poor

On Purim there is a special Mitzvah to give to the poor. This should generally be the value of two meals which will be given out on Purim day. A portion of the money is sent on your behalf to Eretz Yisrael as well as those in need in the Great Neck community. The suggested donation per person is $18 per עני, and the Mitzvah is for two poor people so $36 in total.

Zecher Mahatzit Hashekel

In the times of the Bet Hamikdash, there was an annual collection for the communal korbanot. Each Jew would give a half Shekel. The custom is to give the value of 3 half shekels because is says the word “Terumah” 3 times in Parshat Shekalim. A half Shekel weighs 9.6 grams of silver which currently has the value of around $5.90. The total would be $17.70 per person. If one cannot afford that they can give it as half the value of the local currency which would be $1.50 per person. The best time to give it is on Ta’anit Esther before Mincha.

You can fulfill these Mitzvot online at https://greatneckkollel.org/donate/ Please specify if your payment is for Matanot L’evyonim or Mahatzit Hashekel so that the money can be appropriately distributed.
