לְיֵצֶר מִשְׁפַּחַת הַיִּצְרִי לְשִׁלֵּם מִשְׁפַּחַת הַשִּׁלֵּמִי
From Yetzer, the Yitzri family. From Shilem, the Shilemi family
After the Jews sinned with the women from Moav, there was a plague in which many died. Like a farmer who loses part of his crops, or a shepherd who loses some sheep who want to know whats left of their life’s work, Hashem, the ever-loving father, wanted the Jews counted again.
The Chafetz Chaim writes that we can learn a life lesson from this Passuk. Whatever type of person one wants to be in this world is possible. Those who follow their yetzer, have the yetzer family behind them. One who wants to go in the yetzer direction, will have an entire “family” of enablers. Conversely, one who wants to be shalem – complete, will have many to help him along that road as well.
May we all choose wisely.
